Islam and the Birth of Christian “Just War”
Переглядів 1,2 тис.Місяць тому
Initially, the early Christians refused to fight. Over time, they adopted a Just War stance, and in time used this to justify the forcible conversion of conquered peoples. With the Crusades, Just War was expanded to include what was called “Holy War,” and Christendom went to war in the Middle East with the Islamic empires. Stephen Russell outlines these critical pieces of the church’s history a...

Wow you blew my mind ! So, the tree in Roman's 11 is Israel. It includes Jews who accept Jesus as king, and gentiles who also accept Jesus as king. Anyone else, of any ancestry who doesn't accept Jesus is king is trimmed off. Gentiles grafted in. Not a replacement. Just a trimming and grafting of the original Israel. Is that right ?! I'll be studying Roman's 11. Can you make a video on navigating this political left vs right climate how to be kingdom minded and not off this world ?

This is the way I believe, and I’m so happy that I found this in my Anabaptists Perspectives. The Trinity is Three in One, Each with His Delegated Responsibility in the Kingdom and the Church. The Holy Spirit is shorted often, and His powers are ignored. Some receive the Holy Ghost over a period of time until they receive His fullness, while most I’ve encountered receive Him instantaneously, as they did at Pentecost, just as they did forgiveness and justification from Jesus before Pentecost. He divides these gifts as He willeth - meaning it isn’t always one specific gift a Christian receives so as to prevent pride. To slight the Holy Spirit of His just rewards isn’t right. The gifts and fruits of the Spirit have been here on Earth since Pentecost, not just during Biblical times.. With His gifts in operation, it makes church meetings or prayer meetings more exciting, as you don’t know what the Holy Ghost may do in showing His love of you and Jesus. There are two types of sin - sins of omission and sins of commission. The latter was forgiven during justification; the former is a result of the Adamic sin, in which all humans and babies are born. It is cleansed during the Baptism of the Holy Ghost, i.e. Adamic sin. With the Holy Ghost in us, His Spirit is one with our spirit and brings our attention to that sin of omission so we can receive forgiveness for quenching the Holy Ghost and are forgiven. Babies who die need no forgiveness because they haven’t committed any sins of commission, but are under the Holy Spirit’s purification to eradicate the Adamic sin which we all have inherited as mankind. Hope this makes a little sense - there’s so much I can write on this and all the gifts I’ve seen working during Church or Prayer Meetings or during the spontaneous revivals of Asbury University or where just a few are gathered but are of like mind - unified in the Holy Spirit.

It's literally in the Bible, explicitly in the Book of Acts. You can't just "give up" on it without also giving up on the Bible. It's precisely how things worked in the Old Testament too; the importance of succession from Moses to Joshua is clear.

Matthew 5:41 seems to imply from Christ the law of the Roman soldier toward occupied peoples the right to bear their burden according to Roman law. Jesus said if he compels you to go the distance of the law, to go further. How does such a dynamic work then in the course of human governments today compeling a Christian to at the least bear the burden of a non-combative role. OF course the command of non-violence and no murder can impact combative roles, but what about the law compelling one to take up a role to care for wounded or even (as seemed evident in Jesus day) be the carrier of materials?

I understand that it's good to be non-violent and peace loving, but it's also wrong to overlook crime and oppression. These aren't contractions as long as everything is done out of love. The position that says "let's woo everyone to Christianity", but then says they must quit all governmental or military responsibility IS a seeming contradiction IF (and I think this is true) government is necessary for civilization. Also, to say that there were no Christians in government in the first century is completely false. There is Erastus who was the city treasurer of Corinth and, less directly, but still something to think about Joanna the wife of Herod Antipas' manager. Something else important to say here is that when you become a Christian your primary identity is now in Christ Jesus, not what you do, although you do it for the glory of God. Paul and Luke made this point in the New Testament in regards to Erastus, who's name is mentioned three times, in three books, but only described by his position in one of them.

John the Baptist never told the soldiers to quit as soon as possible. So was he wrong, or were those soldiers actually okay for continuing to be soldiers? Also the Proverbs 31 woman's husband sat at the city gate. So he was likely a guard or a judge, (a government job), and in the entire passage the woman's life was described in positive terms and is considered exemplary. In the Old Testament, God ordered the Israelites to war against their enemies as they were also enemies of God. So at least at that point in time it was Biblically fine. I agree war is often wrong, but I'd need more Bible verses I'm unaware of to reach your conclusion that it is always a sin. Also, it could be the early Christians didn't want to be part of a government that persecuted Christians so they were not part of it for reasons other than nonresistance. I respect you all for your beliefs and support your right to not violate your conscience and fight in wars, but it is important to "rightly divide the word of truth."

Fantastic, you genuinely have the Holy Spirit to the forefront here and you expose the only answer for True Christains to follow Jesus Christ in True Faith and True Trust. This is the only medicine to the christsin churches problems today, introduced by degenerates, wicked servants, who claimed to serve Jesus Christ, using only flattery and lipservice, as they rather desired to unite to the false spouse. False "saintly" idols, who are honored and believed to be the "true" torch bearers to christains, but rather they were the wolves dressed in sheeps clothing and followed the dragon disguised as the lamb. What a fantastic consolation it is to hear the Truth for a change, for the majority of the christain church's are blind to their own ignorance and hypocrisy while desiring to cling to their own denial.

This conversation was so helpful in that it was based in Biblical reality, practical reality, and desperately needed. Janelle presented her material in a logical, thoughtful, and humble manner so that it could only be rejected by intention. I bless God that this content could be available to so many at this hour in time. Unfortunately, so many people are hurting, are feeling abandoned, and are being confused in the church. Of course, the general society has intentionally moved away from God and His truth but the church is to be an oasis of order, hope, and care. This conversation offered hope and healing. Keep up the good work, Janelle.

Yes David is using the word "orthodoxy" not Orthodoxy. In other words, what the word means Orthos ορθος from Greek means Straight (and metaphorically "correct" meaning)... and "doxy" from Latin for "teaching"... so he is just saying "correct teaching" and I am sure his intent is to indicate "Apostolic teaching" or "Historic Teaching". However, not sure if every Orthodox priest would explain this historic perspective correctly, but in general, the Orthodox church still teaches the Trinity correctly.
